Fat Goldfinch

This is an unusually chubby Goldfinch!
Preening himself is difficult.
He rests a lot and flies slowly.
No, this bird is not puffed up against the cold.  It is probably twice as big as the other finches in my yard.
I know how he feels.  It is hard to say, "no" when it tastes so good.

How odd! Poor little guy. If he gets any fatter, how will he fly?

I think it's a she, isn't it? Or all they all the muted color in the winter? Or could it be a juvenile -- who's still wearing her downy coat?

Amy, They are all muted in the winter. The females are even browner. They will be turning bright yellow and black very soon. Goldfinches are among the first birds in spring to molt into their summer clothes. Also one of the firsts to nest.
